One of the things that fascinates me about the human condition, is the notion that we are so similar in that we share the same basic needs (like food, shelter, sleep, and love). Yet within the framework of fulfilling those daily necessities, our days look quite different.
I’m always interested in seeing how other people do things in ways that are in a different style, or a more elevated approach. It’s also fun to catch a snapshot from a season of life and to see how current circumstances can influence how folks go about their days.
So that’s what this post will encompass. I’ll be sharing an account of an “ordinary” weekday.
The Backstory
First, let’s set the stage. Here’s what’s happening in my world and the greater world this Monday, February 12th.
The World
We just started the Lunar New Year. We’re in the middle of Black History Month. The Super Bowl was last night. Valentine’s Day is Wednesday. Presidents’ Day is next Monday.
What’s coming up for me
Tomorrow (Tuesday) I head to Orlando. My sister and her family are visiting Disney this week, so we’ll get to spend a couple of days with them. My parents are also joining us.
We head back home on Thursday. It’s my month to workshop with my writing group so I’m very excited and nervous to share the first chapter of my manuscript with them on Thursday evening and to hear what everyone thinks.
On Friday we bring our kitty to her cancer checkup appointment. At night we’ll pick up my husband’s mom and aunt from the airport, and after that over the following days, more family arrives in town including my husband’s sisters and cousins, and my sister and brother-in-law. Next week will be fun and full, so I’m trying to set expectations about work productivity now.
My mood
Neutral. It has started to feel like spring here, and the sun is shining, so that’s helping. But I also should be getting my period in a few days so I’m a little cranky and impatient.
Work and creative projects
The magazine for which I freelance is in its downtime, in between issues, so I’ve not had any work from them in a few months. It has been great from a life-balance perspective, but a little stressful in that I’m not bringing in any kind of significant revenue.
I’m plugging away at my book, on Draft 1.5 (a major rewrite of Draft 1), and I’m about a quarter of the way through, aiming to finish by June.
My only other major area of focus right now is this, Substack! Subscriber growth has been slow, but steadily trending upward. I’m trying not to put too much pressure on myself to “perform” but instead to allow myself to be curious, to experiment, and to focus on getting to know more of the folks who read and write on the platform.
My podcasts are also in an in-between state at the moment. Steve and I are developing our new show, to be released later this year. When my sister Laura is here next week we’ll be recording a teaser for our next season of Film to Table!
Come along with me on this average day
Alright, that’s plenty enough backstory (perhaps that should have been its own post?) Let’s move on to the day!
