The things that have helped me write my book
I'm in a flow, and I don't want to forget why things are working, so I wrote this

It’s almost my turn to share.
I’m sitting at my desk, trying to focus on the grid of faces on my screen instead of the pounding in my chest. I feel my ring light illuminating every thought running through my head and imagine it broadcasting them across my face like a state-of-the-art projector onto a flimsy sheet.
And then I’m called upon. “Michelle, you’re up. How did your writing go this month?”
I stall. I feel the words getting stuck in my throat, as they try to run backwards instead of out of my mouth.
Do I lie? Downplay it? Give a bunch of qualifiers?
Or do I let the giddiness spill out, dashing any hope that I’ll ever be a brilliant, tortured writer like Hemingway, and tell the truth — the annoying truth — that actually, it’s going really freaking great.
Writing hasn’t always come easy, and in no way do I think I’ve cracked the code, but lately, I think I’ve been on to something. I will give you the qualifier that other projects have been slow, and it has given me time and space to focus on writing.
But I’d be selling myself short if I said that’s all it is. It’s more than that.
I got to thinking about all the things that have helped me get here, in this rhythm, with the finish line in sight.
I wanted to write this post for you, in case you’re in a writing rut right now, but I’m also writing it for me, future me, the one who might go on to forget all of these things that helped her get to this point.
