What do you do?
How to answer when you're still trying to figure that out.
A couple of weeks ago, I was at my sister's wedding rehearsal dinner, a beautiful, intimate event. It took place in an old barn that had been fashioned into an art gallery, and we enjoyed a delicious candlelit dinner with immediate family.
Afterward, the bride and groom opened the event space to the rest of the wedding guests, the majority of whom were traveling from out of town. They had a great selection of wines, and everyone was just beginning to clink glasses and mingle when I had a moment of panic.
My dress was hemmed and dry-cleaned. My sisters and I had written our toast that we'd give during the wedding ceremony. I'd remembered the card. But I had forgotten to prepare for this part.
The part where I'd be meeting new people and the inevitable, dreaded, complicated question would be asked: "What do you do?"

I haven't met a creative person who doesn't stress over this question, and in this post, I'm going to ruminate on some solutions that might help you in your next "what do you do" encounter.
Because this is a space where I feel safe and free to share on a personal level, I'm going to start by giving you my real, honest answer to the "what do you do" question:
