I actually just finished "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder" by Holly Jackson yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Holly does a great job of guiding the reader through the story with the main character, Pip, as she tries to solve a murder case that happened in her town 5 years prior for a school independent project. The police and the town are convinced that Andie Bell died at the hands of her boyfriend, Sal, but Pip and Sal's brother, Ravi, aren't so convinced and work together to figure out what happened. After finishing the book, I started the adaptation on Netflix and am enjoying it, but prefer the book so far. I have the next book in the series in my queue to read in the next week or so, perfect timing for Halloween.
Ohhh! It's the best when you can enjoy a book and a series together. A Good Girl's Guide to Murder sounds just my speed -- not too scary, more mysterious. The trailer looks so good!
Definitely falls on the more mysterious side. It really isn't scary at all, just suspenseful. I finished the show pretty quickly since it was only 6 episodes and overall it was well made and I liked it, but ultimately I would recommend the book over the show. I think 6 episodes was too short to really cover the whole saga which meant they left out a lot of her actual investigating which was the fun part of the book.
But I started book 2 of the series today and am loving it so far!
Hitchcock is the best. I love spooky season! Right now I'm listening to Stephen Fry narrate The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (from Ghost Stories: Stephen Fry's Definitive Collection on Audible)...which is nothing short of terrifying. Highly recommend!
You had my at a Stephen Fry narration! I will definitely need to check that out. I grew up close by to the real Sleepy Hollow and it's always fun to revisit the story.
Michelle! This is such a fantastic concept for a book club/Substack, and I'm not only saying that because you picked my book this month. :) Definitely need to try this cocktail asap. Thank you so much for reading HH!
Thank you, Stephanie! I enjoyed your book so much I'll need to make it an annual read along with my Hitchcock rewatches. Glad you enjoyed the book club format!
Loved reading about your love for all things Hitchcock. I'm an admirer, but nowhere near a connoisseur. I've been (inexplicably) panning spooky season since the pandemic, but feel ready to embrace it again through a Hitchcock film. I also put The Hitchcock Hotel on hold at my library out of curiosity. Thanks for the inspiration!
Congratulations on tackling the closet in your office! I empathize with the spectrum of emotion that arises while decluttering. Sending lots of good energy your way.
Finally, I'm excited to dive back in to Book Club for November. I love classics and think I might challenge myself by reading a new-to-me classic outside of US/UK/Canada. Looking for a title now. Open to suggestions.
Thank you, Anjali! I always enjoy hearing/seeing the different ways people like to enjoy the spooky season. And so glad you're excited to find a classic to enjoy in November. Selfishly, I hope that whatever you choose might inspire you to illustrate something new. :)
Lastly, thank you for all the decluttering encouragement! I'm feeling shifts in so many ways.
